I think the quote "we humans have overshot Earth’s long-term carrying capacity for our species" basically sums the article up.
We know there are too many people using too many resources (look up another of Heinberg's ideas called "peak everything", about common minerals and materials that will run out within the next few decades at current usage rates), yet politicians and big business everywhere depend on everyone spending ever more in order to attain perpetual growth.
So what happens when things start running out? We all move to Mars or start mining asteroids for minerals? (both popular ideas lately)
