Scenario - you have been fleeing from a major city or town and trying to get away as far as possible you are travelling with others whom you have met along the way: a youngish woman (you rescued from her apartment when some thugs broke in and tried to attack her), a middle aged single mother (this lady is very independent and great with firearms) with 2 teenage children, a boy of 17 and a girl of 15. You have encountered many dangers along the way that you have overcome but you are now tired and low on food. Fuel you have been able to find on the way is now getting low, You were captured by a group who are situated in an out of the way compound, (they stole most of the ammunition for the weapons you had) but were able to escape, although the single gun toting mother was shot in the back while trying to protect her kids. She is alive but very weak, and you take of in your vehicle with all. You drive at a furious pace to get away as quickly as possible and eventually find you are not so sure where you are. The car runs out of fuel right near a wooded area, you have a wounded woman in the car and her teen daughter is very anxious about her mum. The young woman is someone you have been able to rely on as she has learnt quickly how to survive. You push the car into the woods to hide it from the main road, it is night so you set up a camp site In the morning you need to make a decision, you know you can't move the wounded mother who is laying in the car tummy down, you have antibiotics to give her which will help with any infections. The teenage boy has also become confident with a firearm and in fact so has the teen girl but she is really upset about her mum and is being a little difficult. You have no fuel for the car and where you are camped has maybe a few small animals to trap and possibly some mushrooms (or other food item depending on the area you are in). There is a good water source nearby. You have maybe 3 handguns with limited ammo. Decision - Option 1) You tell everyone you are going to find a fuel source. The closest source is a weeks journey by foot (you don't know this when you set out), and you don't have very much food and must take one of the handguns with you! You have no idea what you will face when you get to it! Option 2) You decide to stay with the others and camp out until the mother is strong enough to walk for a bit. This can take a couple of weeks and she needs extra food to help her get stronger.
DO you stay or go? NB- This scenario I have taken from a book about an EMP I have been reading!

Seems like there is a 3rd option that's missing.
Option 3) Leave the others. Take your share of supplies, gun, ammo and head off on your own. Maybe invite the youngish women.

Leaving is not an option sorry! lol Option 1 in that case. I'd go nuts just sitting around in such an event, probably want to shoot the teenagers after a few days.

Where exactly is this group heading for ultimately? If they don't have an actual 'safe haven' destination they may as well all stay put. Not a lot of point in fleeing to 'places unknown' is there?
Whats the point of trying to get fuel? Even if you get some then what? Where are they driving to? Does driving a vehicle make them more of a target for armed gangs further up the road? Better to move on foot at night?
Maybe the group can bushwhack a subsequent group of chumps fleeing along the nearby road to source additional food and possibly weapons?
Then there's the nature of the womans injury: is it a near certainty she'll recover? Or is it a bit iffy? Does the wounded mum prefer it if you abandon her and get her kids to safety?

Option 2, you've already bugged out, right now you are in safe place and have all you need.

They are a tight knit group, the fuel is because the wounded one can't walk, she will recover but it will take some time. They are headed somewhere but have no idea what awaits them. No she will not abandon them and has great hunting and firearms skills. Love the questions.

Option 2, you've already bugged out, right now you are in safe place and have all you need. Not enough food sources. The way I read it, there was enough. My idea behind it, it would not be permanent camp, they would only be there a short time.

All good Wolf. I should have made it clearer but yes it was not going to be a permanent camp. The question is asking "Do you leave members of your close knit group to go and find something you need but has a risk! Leaving them without you is also risky to them.

With that in mind I'd forget the fuel and the car - it'll attract too much attention - they've already been ambushed in a vehicle once. Wait til the woman is mobile. Press on to the final destination travelling carefully by night IF there is meant to be another group waiting there to hook up. If not ... slowly coast along until a good long term settlement location is found. I would be looking for opportunities to acquire long arm fire power for the group along the way - with or without their owners. Ditto for food - in a rural setting there is always food to be found. Of course we would move as a split group so that if one group gets ambushed (again!) the other may be able to sting the attackers from behind and give both groups a chance to get away (again!).

Good answer but there is not enough food supply to keep you all sustained. It will take her at a few weeks to recover. Is there a way you can get going quicker, after a few days rest?

All I will say is the car is off the menu as transport. They're in a rural location so there is always food. Might have to range out a couple of kilometres to find it but it's always there. Wheelbarrows will also be abundant and its pretty easy to move an incapacitated person in one of those. Worst case lash up a stretcher to move short distance to a better location if that's needed.
If none of those are options ... all that's left is to do a bunk.

Stretcher is what they end up doing in the book!! The main leader of the group took a week to go and find fuel on a very limited amount of food. He finds a small town and is searching through houses for fuel. He hears some voices which get louder as he approaches. He secretly observes them and sees that they are about to hang some people, he keeps searching for a while and then realises the crowd is about to move off. He ends up finding a car with a small amount of fuel so he grabs that but just as he is finishing he gets caught. He runs for it while being chased and is confronted further on by a guy with a gun. This guy tells him that the other town folk have been hanging people so they can eat them and he wants to shoot our leader so its one more person before his family. Our leader manages to get away and has to travel back to the group. So they have a little fuel on which they can travel maybe another 64 kms. When the car stops again they end up making a stretcher for the wounded mum and taking in turns to carry her they travel on to their next destination.
So your choice to not look for fuel was a good one! I think they should have just rested for a few days and then made a stretcher and not gone looking for fuel.

Hey Rem cool scenario. Thanks for posting that one. Thanks also for posting a conclusion/outcome to it. Very worthwhile.
