A further line of consideration if one were to find themselves in that situation: The nature of the wound. Shot in the back as described (no exit wound) has 3 main 'outcomes' that I can think of. 1. The bullet makes it thru to the lungs. She's coughing bright blood. She's buggered without surgery. May as well leave her. 2. The bullet makes it thru to the intestines. Difficult to tell in first 24 hours but after that as gastric juice seeps out shes in a LOT of pain and will be very sensitive to pressure on abdomen. No hope without major surgery. May as well leave her. 3. The bullet is lodged in the muscles of the back. In which case she was either shot with a .22, low powered pistol of a nearly spent projectile from a higher powered weapon. Either way ... it's a flesh wound. Either way someones gotta do some minor surgery to find and remove the projectile. Even with antibiotics I wouldn't count on a good outcome without removing the bullet and clothing fragments it took with it on the way in. She ought to be able to move slowly on foot over fairly easy terrain after just a few days.

Stretcher is what they end up doing in the book!! The main leader of the group took a week to go and find fuel on a very limited amount of food. He finds a small town and is searching through houses for fuel. He hears some voices which get louder as he approaches. He secretly observes them and sees that they are about to hang some people, he keeps searching for a while and then realises the crowd is about to move off. He ends up finding a car with a small amount of fuel so he grabs that but just as he is finishing he gets caught. He runs for it while being chased and is confronted further on by a guy with a gun. This guy tells him that the other town folk have been hanging people so they can eat them and he wants to shoot our leader so its one more person before his family. Our leader manages to get away and has to travel back to the group. So they have a little fuel on which they can travel maybe another 64 kms. When the car stops again they end up making a stretcher for the wounded mum and taking in turns to carry her they travel on to their next destination. So your choice to not look for fuel was a good one! I think they should have just rested for a few days and then made a stretcher and not gone looking for fuel. You read The Death of Grass? That story shows up the folly of relying on cars in all but the very first day or two of a big SHTF event.

Hey Rem cool scenario. Thanks for posting that one. Thanks also for posting a conclusion/outcome to it. Very worthwhile. Im glad you have enjoyed it! Gets us thinking and this one was about what risk you would take! I will post more as I read other books but if anyone wishes to do a similar thing then feel free. Don't give all the info away at first.

You read The Death of Grass? That story shows up the folly of relying on cars in all but the very first day or two of a big SHTF event. The Death of Grass is one of my all-time favourite reads. It was out of print for a while, but I managed to pick one up when it was reissued as a Penguin Classic a few years ago. While some aspects of the story are dated (eg. many of the male characters had military experience, which would have been correct at the time of writing in the late fifties, but not now), the premise of a disease killing off all the food plants is still true -- the UG-99 disease has the potential to destroy all wheat crops. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ug99

I was going to ask why they couldn't make a stretcher out of branches and take the injured woman with them, and also what her prognosis was as far as the gsw went on wether or not she was likely to survive anyway. But those questions have already been answered so it's all good 😂
