Wiktionary. Nanny state (derogatory) A state whose government institutions are authoritative and over-paternalistic, interfering with and controlling people's lives. [from the mid-20th c.
I thought i’d start a thread on what are some of the most stupid or nanny like laws out there. Keep it light hearted if you can cause this thread could cause serious depression if we can’t have a laugh.
I was reading about the French riots today and why all the protesters were wearing Hi Viz jackets. There is a law in France that every vehicle must have hi viz jacket in the passenger compartment of their vehicle so in the event of a breakdown they can put this on whilst inside their vehicle before they get out to fix a flat etc. They are also required to carry a spare bulb kit and a reflective triangle. Saftey Steve would be proud.

The entirety of Australia's weapon laws are over the top...
I also find it ridiculous that I cannot legally change a tap washer if the water system is connected to the mains supply (if it's only connected to a water tank, I'm good to go). The same goes for toilet cistern repairs, sink repairs (but only if connected to mains sewerage rather than on-site septic tanks or similar), and so on.
But my all time favourite was the [thankfully now repealed] Police Act of WA (1930), under which it was illegal for anyone to have a minor on their premises. In other words, I could have been charged for having my children in my own house. Which also raises the possibility of charging the government with a criminal offence for allowing children into schools, hospitals, and public parks... Silly me - government doesn't have to follow its own laws anyway.

Maybe we should ban pencils, because they make spelling mistakes, and lets ban forks & spoons 'cause they make people fat too! Sheesh!

I use the point of kitchen knives all the time, those annoying little screws that need tightening.

Doesn't WAPOL use drones to catch people riding their bikes without helmets?
In Western Australia, it’s illegal to possess more than 50 kilograms of potatoes.. Your stuffed Pete lol
WA seems to be the home of the nanny state and not just with firearm laws

Look at all the ten pound Poms that have moved there over the last half century! Can't help themselves, they hit the ground and run straight to a Government entity such as WAPOL to sign up! Every second copper you talk to in WA has got an English accent, with blow ins like that you are bound to have tough gun laws, well actually tough everything! South Africans are the second wave!

I cringe when the media covers an arrest of a firearms user and report that such and such had several hundred/ thousand rounds of ammo in their possession. I sometimes shoot 400-500 rounds of .22 in an afternoon. it makes sense for me to buy in bulk.

how about the “justification” for the alcopops tax? now a lot of teens are pinging off their heads with eyes popping out of their heads cause it’s cheaper.
However that law actually did me a favour. I stopped drinking woodstock bourbon pre mix cans. That crap was baterry acid. Thanks .gov for saving my stomach lining.

On a slight tangent ...
Anyone here have kindy or junior primary aged kids? The 'food rules' are completely idiotic. We're now being conditioned to accept stupid restrictions from a very young age. One kid has an allergy to a food ... therefore no child can have that food on the premises.
And so I wonder ... how the hell did kids born before 2000 ever survive the deadly dangers of the school lunch? What are the statistics? How many kids used to be hospitalised or die from being in the same room as a peanut or boiled egg? Was it a lot? Or ... none?

Although as much of the city is officially under a flight path I'd be interested to see WAPOL get charged with an offence there... 50kg of spuds - I haven't heard this one before... Maybe if I have 49kg, Mrs Pete has 49kg, Little Miss has 49kg, Little man has 49kg...

We discovered this at an allergist appointment following an anaphylactic reaction to cashew spread. You'd never guess what the cure was... eating a small amount of cashews daily. Sometimes exposure therapy works. I'm sure that sometimes it makes the problem worse. But in my experience if the government either requires or forbids anything, the net result is negative.

Pleased to hear a positive outcome for her. I know a couple of little kids under 7 with severe food allergies and they do fine. They don't need teachers confiscating other kids lunches to keep them safe.

There's been a major s***fight over potato laws in WA for some years now... to the point where one major greengrocer was giving away free potatoes with purchases of other items for free. That way he couldn't be charged with "selling" them under the prescribed market value...
