Whilst its easy to dismiss this issue as something that happens to people who inflict it upon themselves ... people very often end up like this due to circumstances beyond their control.

I'm divided. The nice half of Frostbite can see the vicious circle: lose job, can't pay rent, homeless.
But my hard side remembers how my parents abandoned me when I was 17, how I bought my first car at 18 and my first property at 21. Without any help from anyone.
At a very early age I was on my own, paying my own rent, on very low wages, and saving a 25% deposit for that 150ac property in northern NSW. No alcohol, very basic food, no luxuries of any kind.
That part of me doesn't feel sorry for homeless people who wasted their opportunities.

I also come from an austere beginning and managed to press on out of it. I consider I was lucky to have the benefit of full mental faculties and to make beneficial social connections early in life.
The big question is what to do with these people.
Can't have them randomly squatting around the place and creating health problems.

Actually, San Francisco has the same problem, only worse. These people are on heavy drugs for the most part and couldn't hold a job under most circumstances, even if an employer would hire them. What to do with them? First, leave them in California.
