Hey guys, So hubby scored 2 of these little cuties recently: They are GME TC655, 1 watt handheld UHF CB radios. We've tested the range out to about 1.6km but neither of us have any idea about UHF - my only experience is the CB radios we had to talk to the other members of the community when I was a kid. Is there any way we can extend the distance? Is there any way to make our conversations on them more private? Also, I would love any tips for 'etiquette,' I know which channels are banned, but are there any other rules (unspoken or otherwise) that we should follow?

gday ,unless you are within 1km of a uhf repeater your out of luck, this model also does Not have the ability to screw on an external antenna , also its a very low powered radio at 1 watt, best to look for a 4 or 5 watt radio

Anything for free is good ! Where I am located you here some weird conversations on UHF CBs most being foul language but can be entertaining. As you might already know , don't transmit on Channel 5 or 35 it's for emergency use only. Here is a good site for some extra info www.uhfcb.com.au

Great score StepfordRenegade! As mentioned above by australia, being 1W these are relatively low powered units. However, these will make great short distance comms. GME also make quality so you can expect them to last. These would be great in moving convoy's, either driving or walking. Bush walking you may loose some distance, i would take a punt at around 500m being the usable distance. These would also be great to carry in your EDC/Car glove box to moniter any potential emergencies. Theres not much you cant find out between ch40 and ch28. Great score!
