I hope a food review isn't out of place in this part of the forum. (If so, please advise and I can re-post elsewhere). After seeing a Jamie Oliver recipe which used "express rice", Mrs Pete and I tried some Uncle Ben's tonight. We've seen it on the shelves, but never tried it before. It was good enough, conveniently packed, requires only 3 minutes of cooking (we just stuck some in the pan with some bean chili we cooked to steam for the last few minutes), so it may well rival 2 minute noodles for convenience. The BB date was almost a year from now. Many varieties/flavours are available. This one lists only steamed brown rice (94%), wild rice (5%) and vegetable oil in its ingredients. Although I still must check to see if it involves halal certification payments (I won't buy it if it does), this - or other similar brands - will definitely find a place in my long term food preps and BOB. I'm also going to look at the viability of pre-cooking rice myself and vacuum sealing in either normal "FoodSaver" bags or mylar (cost benefit vs. time involved is the main issue here). Well worth checking out.

I must clarify - it's not for my "long term" storage, but with a decent shelf life it will find a place in my rotating food stocks.

These are really handy to throw in the lunch box/ crib bag.
If I cook a big curry up and divvy it up into a few Chinese containers for lunches, I'll get enough of these rice packs to go with each meal, saves having stale dried out rice come the last few meals

I like the Aldi brand, and have had a few random ones from NQR, basically it is a mylar bag filled with pre cooked reice, requiring you to only heat it back up, cannot beat that for convenience.

I have the 40 sec cups and the 90 second packs quite a lot when I cook for myself.
Burn some meat, steam some veges and throw one of these into the microwave and bang! I'm totally a chef... Don't question my definition of chef, just let me have this one.

I use them often when I get home late, have to cook dinner for the Mrs and cannot be bothered or do not have the time to do rice the old fashioned way. Technically that is being prepared and I like it. Also if you are doing a stir fry or fried rice, you can do your veggies and meat in the pan, add your sauces and in the last two minutes or so, crack a bag or cup of this stuff, empty it into the pan and WALLA meal ready to eat.

Sort of related.... I got lucky the other week, asked the little woman to cook me a couple of meals to freeze so I could take them to work and save money not buying 7/11 or maccas foods.
She got a little carried away and prepared 15 meals for me, that's a month of rostered shifts. She even mixed it up with a few different sorts of veges in each one, 3 different marinades of chicken breast and brown rice in each. She'll make a fine prepper one day haha

I have tried quite a few ready to eat meals. But stick to the Dry packs so all I have to do is open the top, pour in some boiling water and let sit in the packed till it is ready....Hot meal to go...LOL
For long term storage the dry packs will last much longer than the ready made. They are lighter to carry, and you still need to carry water, but for a BO you can fit more food in your pack.
At home for Long term we have Mylared bulk rice and beans Etc, much cheaper!
Great review Pete, keep up the good work.!!!
