Morning All! We are looking at buying a solar/hand cranked/cell phone charger emergency radio (NOAA Weather Radio) and they have one for $24 at Amazon compared to ones here for $60-$70 (post not included). Is NOAA Weather for USA only or do we have an equivalent here? This is probably a silly question, but will it work in Australia? Will it work on local frequencies? I guess what sticks in my mind is that DVDs work in 'regions'. Is it the same for radios? Also, has anyone purchased from Amazon before? ATM orders over $35.00 are free postage and when I start looking at their 'prepper' items, for me it's like walking thou a country shop full of curios - Bunnings for the men.

Don't know much about hand crank radios but just double check the free postage as it may only apply to USA (if radio is being sent from there).

My only reservation with hand crank devices is that if they contain a rechargeable battery, it is usually soldered onto the circuit board and will eventually fail. You can get these devices with a 1-5F capacitor which should last a lifetime. Just something else to consider. Also I just Googled "Will an American radio work in Australia" which took me to this page, hopefully that is relevant. au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120406045710AA06VZO

Get the Ambient Weather radio. It takes less crank to work.
If you leave it in the sun and listen to the radio, it can charge itself enough for a few more radio hours in the evening.
The battery is an off-the-shelf RCR123A battery (rechargeable CR123A) that can be replaced if it fails. I have a few of these rechargeables for my flashlights.
NOAA broadcasts are US-based so far.
I have one of these and it is good. Get the WMR-112 since this has a siren. Mine is the 111 model which has been phased out.

I've got this one (http://mudadventure.com/2014/02/01/eton-scorpion-solar-torch-review/) and my toddler snapped the hand crank off :/ We've had it for a few years now (and aren't particularly gentle with it) and it's still going strong.
