Hi Members!
Just wondering what people plan to do if SHTF re communications?
Ive added quite a few handheld UHF radios into my preps, both our 4wd's are fitted with UHF units etc. All 5W TX/RX power.
I also have 6 2W units, which wont be good for anything other than short range comms.
NOW, this will all only come into play provided the SHTF does not include an EMP. As most radios will be lost as well as functioning repeaters.
Whats everyones thoughts? What have you added prep wise to overcome this?

On a serious note though, I really should look into communication. Still haven't gotten around to getting any CB radios. Would be nice to install a good system in my car, and that's in the works for the future. At the moment, I have no real communication except normal mobile phones - eeek

At this stage I have a UHF in the 4WD, a UHF and AM CB in mine and my lads backpacks but they will only be useful for short distance comms. Im keen to get into the longer distance HAM radio but currently the cost is the limiting factor.

I have to admit this is the one thing ive been pretty slack on, as i have heard they can shut down cb towers etc, making them expensive paperweights. Thoughts?

On a side note, if i end up with others in the area who are preppers, i know morse, and how to hide drop boxes for keeping in touch :3

Aaah kk, so they need to go back on my shopping list These can be as cheap, or expensive as you want them to be. Currently, Repco have a twin pack on sale for $139 Tradie pack of 2W in a hard case, desktop chargers, mics etc. Great value and really, all you need for group comm's. One for you, one for hubby.

I only say i need to budget, because i always like to have a back up plan, lol So you double it and buy two sets lol. Heres a pic of in my side of the wardrobe. 3 on the left are Oricom 1W radios. Two at the front (i have 5 of these) are 5W FDT handhelds with larger antenna's and the two behind them are 5W waterproof Unidens. I have a 5W FDT in the glove box of each 4wd and one in the camper. I also have 4x 1W Unidens in the camper for the kids. NB: Bad pic...sorry.

What are you Wayno Ex SAS or something! Jeeeez talk about Radioshack! LoL Coming from a grunt...way to give a civie a big head I have a bit more, not in the pic. Ive just finished the "other" 4wd. 99CH UHF, 200CH UHF (RX) and 40CH 27MGHZ. Should cover all short distance radio transmissions post SHTF.

have a pair of motorola 2 way radios powered by 3AA each. 1 is with my mom who live less than 100m away from me. If SHTF, I've told her to open the aluminium wrapped box and put the batteries in. (yeah, I'm paranoid about EMP) Looking to buy more, but at 80+ a pair, its a bit off my reach at the moment. maybe in August I have a shit load of batteries so I'm not too worried. haha.

I carry a 3w handheld (about the size of a pack of 20's cigarettes, not that I smoke) almost everywhere. good to have at least something.

All our vehicles have a UHF mounted in them. Also have about 10 5watt handhelds (Baofeng UV-5r) with extended batteries & aerials. Am wanting to mount a large aerial on the shed with a base station inside next.
