When you say short range and long range, what sort of distances are you talking? What is the furthest you can get handsets like this to work?
Nevermind, found answers in a different thread.

All our vehicles have a UHF mounted in them. Also have about 10 5watt handhelds (Baofeng UV-5r) with extended batteries & aerials. Am wanting to mount a large aerial on the shed with a base station inside next. Because I've gone a bit mad taking pictures of everything lately, here's one that's a month late......

Nice lot of hand helds reyefull. Comms is something I am severely lacking at the moment (UHF in the car is about it), but will eventually get around to improving it

Got a guy at work to load up three of my uv5r's with 80 uhf channels, two privately owned freqs and an encrypted freq with the key.
Now to get him to do the other two.
I'm shit with electronics and comms.
Does anyone know how to charge these off 12v and how good are the extended battery and antenna?

You can get a 12 car plug lead to suit the uv5r charging dock , longer antenna works a treat also , This model the UV5R does not have encyption facility , it's more of a ctcss coded squelch function , unlike motorola encrypted digital radios have true encryption with serial keys that can not be cracked /listened to.

My whole comms understanding comes from the army bcc course... So I'll take your word for it.
Is the effect essentially the same? I talk and unless you have the code and/or too much spare time, you only hear static?

Reyefull how are you finding the Diamond RH771 antenna's? Are they any better than the stocks ones that come with the UV-5R's?

Yeah Jase, as a rough equivalent I'd say they're twice as good. I'm far from any sort of technical bloke but I have noticed about twice the improvement. Austemp, becareful of any 12v ebay gear from China, I've gotten a couple & they've both melted in the car, could be the car though but I don't reckon. Genuine Baofeng extended batteries are good, I get about 3.5 days on a busy worksite from a single charge, never tried other brands.

The 12v adapter was for the car, might rethink that.
The 12v plugs are for the goal zero nomad 7 solar panel.

I talk and unless you have the code and/or too much spare time, you only hear static? incorrect , any receiver/scanner will hear a Baofeng UV5R regardless how its programmed , the UV5R is a analogue Only radio , not digital , what your talking about is the "encrypted" digital P25/DVP-DVP/DES-XL-DES-XL most commonly used by Military/police/business worldwide , No scanner/receiver can "listen" to these encrypted transmissions and are covered by the telecommunications act in various countries. forums.radioreference.com/budget-entry-level-transceivers/239880-baofeng-uv5r.htmlhow current encrypted systems work is that each digital radio is assigned a "encryption key" in most cases over 20 digits long ,each radio registers on the network and if the radio repeaters detect a "cloned" key the radio is immediately stunned making it a radio that is totally disabled basically a brick, hence you cant copy a key because it will be detected immediately(no joke) and most radio techs change the keys via OTAR (Over-The-Air Rekeying) regularly making it a "imposable" to crack system or even at best "try to listen" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communications_securitywww.wireless2way.com.au/secure-radio-encryption.htmlif someone states they can listen to digital encrypted radios they are dreaming ,

Righto, had a halfarse go at the basestation set up, it's rough but it works. The UHF I bought 2nd hand off a sheila about 6 years ago, doesn't scan & only does 40 channels but does'em well. The power box I got given of a real nice chap last week. The aerial is a 6.5db car aerial standing about 6.5 meters above ground. It's copped a fair bit of wind & a storm & stayed there. Must've got inspiration from the leaning tower of Pizza.

Reyefull how are you finding the Diamond RH771 antenna's? Are they any better than the stocks ones that come with the UV-5R's? Jay, these telescopic ones work even better mate. They're about a meter long pulled out & close up to about 2/3rds of the Diamond. I've programmed one of them Baofengs as a scanner & it sits on that. AL-800 is the model, paid about $18 off ebay for it.

I picked up a couple of the RH771's, just waiting for them to rock up in the post.
Nice setup you have got there with the telescopic for the scanner function and not bad for $18!

For those who have had the baofengs for a while now, what's your take on how they've held up? Has anybody found an affordable source for them? Or does anybody interested to get in a group buy for them that I'm thinking about doing at cost price direct from the supplier with a full condiment of accessories available?

I don't have any yet but might be interested in what you can get. Mind you they are pretty damn cheap on eBay anyway.

not sure if i replied this.
1 have 6 x motorola talkabouts for communications. 1 is permanently locked in a faraday's cage at my mom's .. about 30m away from my home.
I have the other 5 locked in another faraday's cage.
Post SHTF, I've taught my mom how to load it with batteries, tune to channel 1 and call us. I should do a couple of dry runs with her soon I think.
Singapore is small enough that post-SHTF, we can survive with the 6 walkies.
