malewithatail: In one swoop, the USA has created the 5 th most powerful army in the world. The total amount of aid given to Israel in the last 60 years is 100 billion, and now they gave the Taliban 80 billion dollars of stuff. Who is this insane president anyway ?

10hr flight home from Hawaii I read a non fiction survival book called Savage Jungle, by Iain Finlay. It recounts the true story of Arthur Shephard's 3.5 year survival in the Malayan jungle in WW2. Read this book several times before. A great account of surviving in a harsh environment whilst trying to avoid hostile forces. No gear junkies here, just real life survival with the barest of equipment.
Got this out of the library following the above description, and having just finished it I definitely recommend it. Well written and an amazing story. Interesting how most of the direct threats he faced after the first month or so were disease related rather than resulting from engagement with the enemy. Not just malaria, which is obviously bad enough, but also the less directly serious diseases like tinea and beri beri which limited his mobility and hence made life more dangerous.
Also a good reminder about the value of making alliances. And, it must be said, the importance of luck (several of his comrades did all the right things but didn't make it to August 1945).
