What also impressed me out there weather-wise was going out with the Warlpiri yapa and lighting up country in certain weather conditions to make huge smoke clouds that built storms and made it rain.

I met a lady a little while ago, and the conversation drifted towards prepping ( started with alcohol ). She says that there are a number of water holes north of Port Augusta that most people don't know are there! Here's my question - how reliable is Google Earth to check out a possible BOL for water, etc?

Here's my question - how reliable is Google Earth to check out a possible BOL for water, etc? I do know it'll be completely useless at checking out what contaminates are in the water...

Here's my question - how reliable is Google Earth to check out a possible BOL for water, etc? Based on comparing places I know on the ground with google imagery ... Generally not that good. You have to have a pretty good idea where to start looking on google first, then zoom in pretty tight ... even then ... easy to miss. And Pete makes a good point ... you'd have to recon in person to figure out water quality. Just because cattle drink it doesn't mean you can water vegetables with it.

Google is ok for locating man made infrastructure like dams, particularly in a desert environment. However as you'd know dams are sometimes unreliable out here so caution and a recon mission is advised. Natural water apart from rivers and lakes rarely show up on google as the resolution is generally pretty poor.

A couple of years ago I spent 5 days walking through Karijini NP in the Pilbara with some mates. On day 3 we camped here. A lush spot with plenty of water as you can see. Here's the Google Earth pic of the same place. Now it is clear that there are are water courses, but there is little reason to go to this spot on the promise of water. That said for larger bodies of water and even dams it would work. In fact I have a huge file of my local area and it does show a heck of a lot of detail, but I used the council's aerial images and their's are much better than Google's. Possibly different years and different times of year, but still.

Go to the council website (for example, wanneroo.wa.gov.au) and drive yourself mad trying to find a link to "Online Mapping", or "Intramaps", or similar. There's no consistency between council website formats... This will [often indirectly] lead you to something like this: mapimage.net/intramaps80/?configId=ab754696-b230-4955-a588-975c4d34312a (you often need to accept terms & conditions. There's actually quite a bit of information available here. I have noticed that some rural shires haven't subscribed to Intramaps, but AFAIK most have.

In NSW department of Land has the best maps, maps.six.nsw.gov.au/ can download all the topo maps as well. All local councils have very detailed maps - not always directly available.

How do you access council's aerial images? What Peter said basically. On my council's site it's called "Interactive mapping" I think.

Here's the difference between Google Earth and my council's version. (Council on the left) The council one is more recent as well.

No more streaking for you then - too good imagery for the rest of us That's funny. There's an aerial photo (from a different provider) of my old house in which you can see me enjoying a cigar in the backyard. I remember the particular date & time that photo must've been taken; I recall seeing the plane fly overhead, and some young punk in the area tried jumping the fence into our yard. I was standing there smoking a cigar (wearing black cargo trousers, black long-sleeve t-shirt and black cap), watching him come over the fence and shouting at him, "What the f*** do you think you're doing, son?". I've never seen such a confused look on a kid's face in my life. Priceless.
