BOB ~ 3 Day Food Supply
After accumulating MREs, 3-day emergency food packs, and various canned and dried commercial foods, I finally started reading labels, trying to find out the quickest, cheapest, lightest, and easiest way to have 3 days of calories in my bug-out-bag. I think I have the answer.
First: 3 multi-vitamins. This takes care of all of the "vital nutrients" I need. Naturally, I won't pack 3 pills, but a bottle of 50 or so.
Second: 2 - l lb (453g) jars of chunky peanut butter (The store brand is $.99 each on sale). Each jar contains 14 servings, so 2 jars contain 28 servings. Each serving has 180 calories, so the 2 jars contain 5040 calories, or 1680 calories per day for 3 days. The 2 jars contain 420 grams of fat, or 140 grams of fat per day for 3 days. The recommended daily allowance is 75 grams, so I'll have a little less than double my recommended daily intake. In a "bug-out" situation, I'll probably need it. I'll also get a total of 196 grams of protein in the two jars, or 65 grams of protein per day.
Third: 1 box 12.7oz (360g) multi-grain crackers. The box contains approximately 104 crackers (no, I didn't count them), and costs $1.49. At 34 crackers per day, I'll be getting 595 calories per day, plus 1105g of sodium, plus 25.5g of fat.
So, for 3 days, I'll have a calorie intake of 2275 calories per day, 165.5 grams of fat, all my necessary intake of vitamins, with no need to light a fire, carry a pot for cooking, carry eating utensils other than my knife, and I'll end up with an empty cardboard box to tear up and use as fire tinder, and two plastic jars with lids good for keeping other stuff. After 3 days, I'll probably be a bit tired of peanut butter, but this looks to me like a good, cheap, and efficient way to cope for three days.

I bet you'll be tired and revolted by the taste of peanut butter by the 2nd morning

Have you tried eating this 3 day peanut butter diet just under 'normal' conditions?
Seems like it could give you a severe case of liquid manure?

"quickest, cheapest, lightest, and easiest way"
It isn't always the best way..

Interesting perspective. I understand the need for the food to be light, but why cheap? How many bobs are you building?
I had a lot of chats with my 8 year old when she was initially designing her bag (she calls it her emergency bag) and she really stressed the importance of foods that she loved to be included. She felt she would rather be a little hungry but have somthing she really wanted to eat would be more important because it would keep her happy.
Now we're not all kids... But that discussion in particular made me swap a few items in and out of my own bag because I found it hard to disagree. I reckon by day 3 you'll be wishing you spent the extra $5 on somthing tasty.
Philosophy aside, i really like small vaccum packed bags of trail mix with easy tare slots cut in. You can get some really tasty mixes if you spend a bit extra. Variety is key in my opinion.

If you want to go really basic, make some pemmican and hard tack and the jobs done! Both will keep for years and the pemmican will provide you with far more nutrition than the peanut butter.

Shelf life can be low due to oils going rancid. Peanut butter is also excellent bait for trapping. Vitamins are a good idea for BoB - in 3 days vitamins and minerals in the body would not be depleted. Like the idea of not having to cook.

I like your thinking but you forgot the other essential food group ... chocolate!! In all seriousness, great work. Are you going to test it out soon?

I figure 3 day's of calories under 3 lbs in weight with no cooking is a doable option...
