So I enjoy a couple of Reddit forums. I always thought they were a bit like the old newsgroups. But I’m starting to get completely disillusioned with it. So someone asks a question - say a medical one, a number of people post stupid answers, I post the correct answer to the question and politely say the other replies are wrong and I get downvoted and the idiots posting shit get a dozen up votes. This has now happened several times. I’m always polite.
serious question..... how does reddit actually work? What is karma? And how does the voting work? I’ve Wikipedia’ed it and still cannot get it. Is it a whole lot of teenaged boys in basements pretending to be experts and I’m wasting my time?
Anyone else here waste time on Reddit?

I just read reddit, i dont have an account. The main boards i like to read is r/conspiracy and r/privacy. The up/down voting system should be scrapped, same as likes and karma should be scrapped, the conversation should speak for itself without interjection from from a mostly misused piece of software.
Seems like you are into medical info, what do you make of this below?

Sigh....... it is absolute and complete BS written by someone who is good with words, but not so much science.... I can go less than 50m from where I am currently sitting and see this virus under a scanning electron microscope and look at its genetic profile from a patient from yesterday. That article is sh!t and it makes me really angry...... I don’t understand what motivates authors like this.

Hey bce ... its the internet. Not worth getting angry over. The main reason the internet exists is for idiots to spread bullshit, porn and advertising.
This forum is the ONLY place on the entire internet where I interact. I don't bother with social media for the same reason - too much moron-ism on display.
Anyone using reddit for sourcing their medical information probably needs to learn through suffering. LMAO.

I float around on reddit but rarely post. I'm similar, this forum is one of the few places that I actively get in and post rather than just lurking and seeing what others have to say. But a large part of that is that I generally feel like I have a decent amount in common with a lot of the folks here. I also enjoy that as a group of people, we are relatively respectful. Differing opinions don't necessarily result in a 'wotehfuq you nub' responses.
I think reddit really can be a great resource (I love my mead subreddit!) but you just have to vet them. If you go through about 10 or so threads and find you can't understand them or they're basically idiots... Move right along. I'm not interested in wasting time with people who disagree purely to disagree. I have kids for that, I don't need my time to be wasted with checking up threads that are full of the same thing lmao.

I believe there is a virus, but it wasn't made in nature, what are your thoughts?

serious question..... how does reddit actually work? What is karma? And how does the voting work? I’ve Wikipedia’ed it and still cannot get it. Is it a whole lot of teenaged boys in basements pretending to be experts and I’m wasting my time? Just realised that I didn't even answer those questions. So Karma isn't worth anything. It's a popularity vote most of the time. It's supposed to bump 'good' responses up to the top so they're first viewed, but as is often the case in highschool where people can say whatever they like with no repercussions, people will up or down vote on the basis of people they like or don't like. It's entirely arbitrary in most subs. HOWEVER when you find your people (ie. a good, respectful sub) you can actually rely on good posts being voted up to help you find the best info quickly. Voting just bumps up your karma numbers. You'll see a number up in the top right corner, that's your karma rating. Once you get past a couple of hundred karma, people don't really pay attention to that number anymore. Some subs use your karma level to decide what actions you can take like posting in subs that you're new in. Some set a karma requirement of 50 karma or such just to post in the sub and that's purely to keep bots or trolls out. As for teenaged boys, it really depends on what sub you're on. The finance ones I assume are mostly either boomer dudes (no shade, financial education was a thing when boomers were young, it doesn't get into the education system enough anymore but the drowning 'just eat less smashed av, love' comments get real old after a while) or younger wolf-of-wallstreet wanna be manlets who like to sound impressive. I don't post often in those, the elitism is pretty rife. The last time I asked a question because I genuinely didn't understand a concept and wanted to learn I got a million snide "If you don't understand this concept, you shouldn't have finished primary school" responses. Riiiiiight.... Eat a bag. I want to learn, you don't want to teach. That tells me a whole lot more about you as a person than my education levels. BUT as I've said, some subs are amazing. I've been a member on a mead one for years and they're lovely over there. Older dudes with decades of experience, young ladies who have ideas on how to turn your melomel into a carbonated sugar bomb, professionals and hobbyists and people who've never even bought more than 250g of honey at a time. And everyone is accepted and treated with respect no matter how silly or random the question or comment. They're great folks Ultimately I find that it's a bit of a crapshoot. At the end of the day I get more benefit out of other people's posts on the elitist subs and don't interact. But crafting, food, homesteading, and the like? Generally those subs are great for learning/educating and just a general chat.

I remember once pointing out to a friend how it was ironic that in this day and age of the internet we have all the greatest achievements and knowledge of mankind in the palm of our hands and what do we do with this unimaginable pool of information and inspiration? look up porn , cat videos and try to win keyboard arguments He blankly looked at me and said yeah but its funny hmm that 10 year age difference really does come through at times As for reddit meh its just another resource pool that is infected with stupidity and ignorance

Reddit is terrible. It is all bots and hivemind that upvote whatever opinion is in vogue. People have no thought and just upvote whatever everyone else is, and any opinions of the contrary are downvoted to hell. Its almost an unusable platform now. It used to be good in about 2010.
