Many of you are far and away more electric tech savvy than I..
About 7-8 years ago, a bit more or less... I was looking at hand held GPS units to do geocache with.. There was a bunch of that in the area and it looked like fun... Without a mentor to work with the more I looked into this unit or that unit the more over my head it became.. And the more I felt the people I was talking to were more interested in making the bigger margin sale than finding what would work best and what I could handle.... So..
I'm sure in this amount of time the technology has become more user friendly, but also more advanced which may equate to complicated...
Remember my electronic skill level would be considered "cave man"..
I'm not too bad out in the bush for knowing my directions.. I got my big brother in and out of some places where he would still be today if I hadn't been there to save his a$$... However, put me in a large building, mall or such and I'm forever lost...
Advise, experience, things I should know, useful comments .... ?? ??
If there is a better place for this, please move it...

There are some very good GPS apps that work on smart phone. Plenty of YouTube vid on best smartphone GPS app and how to use them and what is best for different uses. Newer technology is “Garmin in Reach” where one can get an inexpensive contract with Garmin, where one is able to send and receive SMS (text) anywhere in the world using satellite technology. Capability also allows a fixed interval location uploaded to a web page that can be tracked, by family members or anyone you share with. Go smart phone app, but it want remote communication ability the new Garmin In reach type GPS is the go. They are also much easier to use that previously. discover.garmin.com/en-AU/inreach/personal/

For the most basic of basic would be the etrex 10. However if that's the style you want, you may even look at the Garmin instinct and the Garmin foretrex. If you want one with topo maps (and the ability to have satellite imagery) check out the etrex 22 or above.
If you want to blow it out of the water the Garmin Montana and Garmin overlander is up there. But I suspect you'll find what you need with the ones inbetween.
