I don't really trust ebay for things like that... And the perth mint says it's a condition of buying pm in Australia so if say every business in Australia will have this. And the shipping from the USA will jack the cost up...
I don't mind giving my info as I'm not money laundering which I think they are concerned about bits it's just annoying. Charge my card and send me the damn silver

People without the funds to purchase their own metals should look into opening a SMSF self managed super fund, easy to set up and once done your superfund can purchase all the metal it can afford. Stash it at a secure location. When SHTF just go collect it. If things are really that bad and there is no rule of law, the ATO is going to be the least of your worries.

I don't really trust ebay for things like that I think provided you don't buy out of China, read the description carefully, and buy bullion made at reputable mints, you'll be fine. I've bought all mine off ebay and have no worries about any of it. Another option is to just visit your local coin/antiques/collectables/numismatic store (assuming you have one). Most of them either stock or can source bullion if you want it.

Just my two cents worth: I looked at buying some but decided that if they bring in the cashless society and a chip where no one can buy or sell with out it...then all the gold in the world will be useless! That's the goal of the cashless society...no cash...no trade...no barter all will be illegal!

My biggest concern about post-crunch precious metals is that too few people understand them - their value, their quality and if they are genuine. This will possibly limit it's usefulness and therefore it's value.

As gold is worth an inflated monetary value at present and as you said most won't know the value of the metals! Where Ammo and food will have value! You could trade food for metals after the event!

My 2 cents, research Soviet russia, more the internal black market, for luxury items, I bet pm would be used as a tradable resource

I don't want to sound like I'm picking on you mate... But think of it as a tradable resource, if shtf I don't know the purchase power of $20 worth of silver, but I bet it will be more than $20 cash... (Concidering most people will view cash as useless) and that's a bet I will take any day

Even if we did have a cashless society we would still need gold and silver to back it.

So who thinks that 5% of my savings should be in silver (can't afford gold, no point buying in half ounces or less and at the moment I'd prefer them to be in $200 ish quantities.
I'm thinking I'll buy 10x 1 ounce bars and then the rest in 10 ounce bars to start. Then buy another 10 ounce bar every couple months or so.
Thoughts?

Spare cash, is my thought, so if its $20 a week or $50 a week just what is considered spare imo

Yeah I could set aside what I consider spare then when it's enough buy a bar. But if I've got spare cash laying around my gf will sniff it out like a bloodhound and get some shoes haha. I've got too many bank accounts, to set aside money for various things and help me keep track (house savings, annual and monthly bills account and a "saving for large purchases" accoubt). I don't really want another one. So I think I'll just take maybe 20% of my saving-for-spending account and get some silver. And do that every 6 months or so...

If that's considered spare cash then why not

First off I wish to apologize to everyone. I was too quick to write with out looking up the values of metal! Gold is around $1400.00 an ounce and silver is around $19.50 per ounce. My head was in a different place....Up my bum...LMAO
What I was trying to say was: Beans are $3.5 per kg or less Rice is $1 per kg or less Wheat etc is around 1-1.50 kg !50kg beans and 200kg rice and 200kg wheat/buck wheat will feed 4 people for 12 months = $1075.00 leaving $2425 for can stuffs and extras. for the cost of 2.5oz of gold.
And if I was starving...I would hand over an 1oz of gold for a few kg of beans and rice!
That's all...

Yep doc, you can't and shouldn't prep with PM alone, prepping is about covering all bases. You're right in that there's no point buying gold if you don't have a good store of other preps.
