There must be a reason why evolution hasn't entirely eliminated the Caecum in humans and left it literally as 'an appendix' to our gastrointestinal tract. I'd say you and that paper from Duke are on the mark.
If Koalas can extract nutrition from something as indigestable as Eucalyptus ... the Caecum must be an outstanding digestive device.
Now ... on a side topic ... if you tell me you had your appendix removed as a 'prep' I'll cast a statue in your honour.

Amazing stuff! Sauerkraut is something I've always wanted to try making and we go through so much of the rubbish aldi stuff (is just pickled in vinegar).
I will try it soon. (I hope by posting this I force myself to hold to my commitments and have some fresh sauerkraut in my future!)
Need to make a trip to the german butcher and buy some weisswurst... that'll motivate me!

Need to make a trip to the german butcher and buy some weisswurst... that'll motivate me! Damn straight you do. Weisswurst is awesome. The first time I ever had it was in Germany at my uncle's house. He served it with sweet mustard, potato salad and a 1/2 litre of beer. For breakfast. Everything a man needs to attack the day ahead...
