Gillette shaving gel - 6 yrs old - absolutely fine. Palmolive shampoo - 9-10 yrs - liquid but noticeable jelly consistency - works ok Palmolive conditioner - 9-10 yrs - absolutely fine
tomato paste - 8 yrs old - small Heinz tins - slightly darker red than brand new - very deep red - used in stew - tasted first and seemed ok. Stew was fine. milo - large ‘bulk’ 2kg tin - 7-8 yrs - absolutely fine - couldnt tell not brand new.
Kitkat chocolate- 5 yrs old - stale taste - could eat, but definitely didn’t taste fresh. Thrown out coconut milk - 7 yrs old - smelt metallic - used in green chicken curry - couldn’t notice taste. Drowned out by chilli flavour.

As long as you're not expired, it's a good day!

bce1, just wondering, is this part of an experiment you set up some time ago?

Was that an unopened milo tin or one that had been opened previously and just capped again?

No grand experiment. I have been doing long term food storeage for 20 yrs now. I got serious in 2005-2006 and have mostly adopted ‘store what you eat, eat what you store ‘ But I have odd things I store more of than we eat and sometimes consciously buy in bulk knowing we won’t eat it in the normal course of things. I have a whole lot of older expired stuff but the storeage conditions have been good and the packaging looks perfect. Next up is 10 year old ham and some tuna. The milo was unopened No experiment just seeing what lasts and what doesn’t I have become very frustrated with food storeage’ experts quoting very short shelf life’s. Oft quoted is that tomato’s are very acidic and don’t last - I have 8 plus year old cans now and they are absolutely fine both taste and appearance - I suppose nutrition value could have deteriorated but seems unlikely - since cannot trust experts doing trial and error myself. Hypothetically may have treated BILs dogs kennel cough with 8 year old doxycycline as he was to tight to want to pay vet $150 bucks. Hypothetically seemed to have worked ok

Outstanding work bce1! I have a quantity of surplus foods vintage 2008 which I have been wondering about ... now I'm encouraged to try some of them.
I had some home bottled peaches from 2006 ... they sat in a dark cupboard until earlier this year. They were super soft but smelt and tasted ok. I didn't actually swallow any as I have no idea if ALL microbial toxins have warning flavors or if some (specifically botulinum) are flavorless/odourless.
I am a wild mushroom enthusiast and am keenly aware that there are some very toxic lifeforms that one can eat without being aware of it at the time. Only to suffer fatal consequences some time later.

I’m really not crazy!
It’s educated risk management. I do my research. I think risk is very very low with basic principles. All around Australasia there are people finding tins of beans or spag at the back of a cupboard and having it on toast and it’s years old - provided the packaging is ok most people don’t notice.
In NZ Heinz / Watties have been progressively changing to new style labels over several years and it’s common to see old label tins in people’s pantries all the time - so some of them are 2-3 years old and being eaten normally.
Not worried about the milo or chocolate - worst that can happen is the oils go a bit rancid and tastes horrible.
These are intact cans, with no sign of damage or corrosion
The ham tasted like tinned ham. Haven’t done the tuna.

In fact the ham was from a decent pelican type box with 10 days grab and go food in it, literally had only been opened once or twice in 10 years - all the contents packaging wise looked brand new - like supermarket new - you honestly would have thought had just been bought. Storage is everything - cool, dark, dry, protected from insects and rodents.

Home packaged wheat and rice - plastic pails only. No Mylar.1998. My first excursion into long term food storage.
Perfect!!
Wheat held shape and integrity. Some broken down kernels at bottom of bucket. Ground to flour. Lovely bread Rice - ditto. Tasted fine. Cooked and behaved normally.
This is the oldest stored food I had. Honest think the 20-30 year label on rice and wheat is made-up. Time will tell.
