I've missed bacon.... --- --- Really ! !.... Your the first vegetarian I have heard admit to cravings from ...the other side... as it were.. There are things like turkey bacon (?) and similar.. The few products like this we have tried were not a good experience even compared to the product they pass off today as affordable consumer bacon.. We much prefer our homemade version with lean pork loin..
Back to the subject.. Commercial producers will have there bad elements in the system.. Just like there will be bad elements in ...fill in the brand.. car dealers for instance.. Maybe not a good comparison, but you get the idea..
Here in the far north we are lucky to be neighbors to or have local family businesses that raise and process animal products..

We much prefer our homemade version with lean pork loin.. Oh absolutely I've missed meat, and so has the hubby! I think anyone that says that they haven't when going vegetarian or vegan either has been so from birth (believe it or not, I know a couple. Not that unusual these days) or is kidding themselves! Before we went vego, I used to hang my own prosciutto and I smoked an absolutely mean rack of ribs in my smoker. We figure vegetarianism/veganism is much like religion. It should be your own choice based on your own moral compass and ethics rather than being doctrinally brainwashed or forced into it, so the kids have continued to eat ethically farmed meat this whole time. We've both eaten meat on occasion over the years. We would never turn down food offered to us when we're guests so there's been a handful of times otherwise where we've eaten meat without guilt or shame. It's easier for us because we're very much ok with eating meat if we know the animal has been well cared for in life. I think most 'standard' vegos can't come at that because they think eating animals is wrong full stop. We think unnecessary cruelty is wrong, so if they're cared for well and have a good death then it's the natural order of things. Ethically farmed/hunted meat is awesome and in my mind should be the norm. But there certainly are some really great meat substitutes out there these days no matter how much people roll their eyes at them... Although you're right, they simply HAVE NOT gotten a good bacon substitute right yet! I think that's why a lot of people flag it as the one thing they miss. Minced meat. Mock seafood. Substitute burgers. They're all getting so good you'd struggle to tell the difference. But bacon? Not yet. But I think it's been a great experience because we now have a huge repertoire of legume and tofu based dishes that we'll continue to eat because we really really enjoy them. If/when SHTF we have a huge stock of dried produce that will be easy to use because we've done it for ages and we have quite a few dishes that our sprouts (pun intended) really love that are bean-based. Any way I've gone off on a tangent lol. I think you're very lucky where you are, in the area we're moving to there's not a lot of game apart from a few roos and rabbits that I wouldn't risk taking for how diseased they are. That being said we'll be far closer to the ocean and a few really good fresh water sources so there's a lot more opportunity for fishing. Smoked trout anyone?

I have always been about as lousy a fisherman as I'm a black thumb gardener.. I have only dipped my hands in the Pacific once when Sweetie took me to some of the inside passage where she grew up on the light house..
I think this deserves another thread.. Where to put it ?? Bush Tucker ? Food ? Outdoor sports ?
Give me some guidance here....

And then govt can ban home chooks, thus giving big business the monopoly on chooks and eggs.

Let em try and ban home killed meat, and home made milk, unpasteurized etc.

Authoritarian governments hate self-sufficient citizens. Quite frankly I'm amazed they haven't outright banned chooks in metro areas for some made up 'safety' concern.

www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/news-life/mum-felt-fine-before-dying-in-sleep-after-positive-covid-test/news-story/c0498f4b9b2f19737cfadd019f8ea247Another garbage article from News.com.au In short: A mother has sadly passed away in her sleep suddenly. The Article hints towards Covid being the likely cause of death, as the mother had just tested positive and had 4 vaccinations for Covid. The article also suggests the side affects of Covid “This can impact the heart, causing myocarditis and pericarditis — inflammation of the heart muscle or outer lining of the heart." which I feel is a bit of a stab in the dark. Now when I received each of my Covid Vaccinations, the waiver I received prior which I needed to sign, had these symptoms documented also from receiving the jab, yet the article fails to mention this as a possibility. Forcing me to call this out as a Garbage article.

Signing something that says it might kill you if you take it ! No job is worth death as a by product of a requirement. I said I will fix it, then there is no need to remind me every 6 months.
