Sad in many ways, but at least most people saved heaps while they were making good money so they are OK now....oh wait, they bought effing jet skiis.
I've seen this over in Karratha, every bloody house has a jet ski, big boat, caravan, 2 new FWDs, and a couple of motorbikes parked out front to show off. So far I think Karratha is still doing OK but it's only a matter of time and these will have for sale signs as well.
I stayed with a mate in Hedland a while back, opposite his place were new town houses selling for $1.3M, I just read a story that there were houses that originally cost $1.3M now (not) selling for $500k. I wonder if they are the same houses?

One reason we left there was the unrealistic view our kids started to develop there. There was so much wealth, like the jetskis and kids on motorbikes etc and lots of kids where bought brand new cars to drive etc. We moved further north to the Atherton Tablelands and it was much more balanced for the kids. My kids have always had to work for what they want ( they are all employed currently in the UK) and my eldest daughter eventually bought her own first car, an old bomb but was so proud of doing so instead of the past "Oh I would be so embarrassed" sort of attitude. Hubby never wanted to buy a property there as he knew that one day the downturn would occur and we would be left with a home that was worth less than what we paid for it.

Hey I live in Moranbah As far as the boats, jet skis, Harleys out the front, I only know of 2 houses that have those things parked out the front now (that I pass each day at least) Yes the kids here are still self entitled dipshits who still all believe that they don't have to get apart time job after school as daddy will get them a job driving trucks in the mines (thus why the maccas is staffed totally by 457 visa people, because local shits refused to work there) And our mine has only pout on 2 leccy apprentices this year, and will be the last year that apprentices are put on. But the coal downturn they always reference to is all about thermal coal for power plants, the majority of the coal coming from around this area is Met. coal used in steel making, so still fetches a higher price. On a lighter note, as much as they deny it, Norwich Park is going to reopen soon, but as a 100% contractor mine, word around the site atm is it's Downer have snagged the contract. Even know I am on a good wage for an apprentice, I still struggle each week to cover costs, when the wife and kid moves up here later this year, at least I'll no longer be stuck paying 2 rents anymore, but still got to work off the credit card and car loan (and no it's not a sports car or a big shiny 4wd , just a humble 7 seater family car )

We see a lot of that in Perth - FIFO workers who are terribly deeply in debt, because they feel they must have all the toys. Like any boom throughout history, the mining boom (which is currently winding down) will stop altogether.
I don't have a FIFO income - not even close. But we budget, prioritise, sacrifice, and try to live simply to safeguard ourselves about the imminent economic collapse. I was also blessed with a couple of very good investment opportunities as a teenager. Being debt-free is a goal that is now quite visible to us.
When large number of FIFO jobs are lost (or these miners will find work with much less pay), the toys will be what they sell first. I hope to have the cash to buy a cheap caravan/camper trailer, boat, and possibly an off-road bike at this time, and I have no guilt whatsoever about capitalising on their misfortune (aka bad planning, desperation, etc.) at this time. Once they've sold their toys, entire suburbs will experience house value crashes, as banks will foreclose en mass.
That is - IMHO - when "zombies" will terrorise Perth and its suburbs.

Hubby was with Moranbah north mine working for Anglo.

On the same vien, but a tad off topic. My son sold his motor bike this week via Gumtree and had quite a few 'buyers' that worked in a mine in NZ. They said they were happy with price, would 'wire' or use paypal and would organise to have it shipped to Darwin?? He lives south of Sydney. He had text after text with the same scenario. There will be lots of desperate sellers as the mining downturn excelerates and their desperation to sell and recoup losses will see the scam artists from Nigeria come out of the woodwork. He sold it after a few days to a local buyer and for cash.

Bit off topic as well. I had and PayPal scheme tried on me. They would only pay via paypal but I had to forward some cash to their freight company. They thought ram was about computers. They did not realise that in Australia ram meant sheep with cojones.
