Seems I have one of them, couldn't be bothered replacing it though.

I liked this comment on the article: "Well, this is a little bit hilarious. Apple changed to the lightning connector and added the chip citing concerns that third party suppliers would supply inferior products that could cause electric shock and fires. Nothing about making a shit load of money from USB/Lightning cables that are sold at $35 or so. Now, seems like the OEM is the inferior safety product? With a bit of luck it will cost them a bomb."
Living in China, people don't want to buy locally made stuff cos its often reputed to be low quality or dangerous. The thing is that you usually get what you pay for --- the OEM stuff is more often than not the same quality as the branded one, and in fact often comes off the same assembly line, but will be cheaper due to not having the logo on it. Then there's things like car airbags, where for years some of the big auto brands were saying people were hurt in accidents due to using cheap inferior/secondhand/counterfeit/refurbished airbags to save money. It has since come out that the Japanese company that has supplied all their airbags for decades has known about design problems for years, and was covering them up in order to save money on doing a recall. In the meantime, more people were injured due to defective airbags, all of which had come with the cars from the factory.
I guess its not just the cheapy Chinese manufacturers that cut corners or do stuff to save a buck - look at the mess VW has got itself in in the past few months for another example.

VW were in the news again just tonight, cars losing power for no reason or something. That'll teach people to rely on computers for stuff
