A book looking at the aftermath of the Second World War in Europe. Some amazing insights into essentially a post-apocalyptic existence. Found a reference online, bought on kindle and have polished it off in 48 hrs - utterly fascinating and scary. To a degree there was an end point and a future , but still depressing, www.amazon.com/Savage-Continent-Europe-Aftermath-World-ebook/dp/B006ZL9C8E

My father experienced WW2 Europe first hand. The period after D-Day in France was very chaotic, and being captured by the Americans didn't mean you wouldn't starve to death. He didn't talk a lot about it, but what he did tell was harrowing.

You could also try "The 900 Days: The Siege of Leningrad" by Harrison Salisbury. It's a big book but a very convincing read of why to prep. I just pulled it out today to re-read because I was feeling complacent. Disturbing but worth reading.
