Meh. People have been ignoring engineers who tell them not to build in floodplains for a very long time now.

Meh. People have been ignoring engineers who tell them not to build in floodplains for a very long time now. Yes it is ridiculous building in flood zones. I remember working as a consultant in Newcastle NSW years ago. One woman was going berserk over her house falling into the lake blaming the Americans for climate change - and the Americans should be sued for damages. Went back to 1972 aerial photographs that showed the house was built in the lake - part of the lake was backfilled then built on. The lake was just taking what belonged to it... The issue with the next years forecast is that US farmers are going to suffer and they will have power outages. Californian GDP is about 3.5 times that of Australia, big impact on world growth and food supply. Wet weather in NSW does affect some farmers, and will be a drag on the economy. If global financial system collapse in the next 6 months shtf... the wet weather will be misery squared. It always amazes me that there are floods and within 1 day, people are out of medication and food, need SES to bring in supplies. I am fully expecting the economy to fail shortly the regrets will be unmeasurable.

Even though this farm has a creek that runs through it, it is 100's meters from our houses and poses no threat, apart from not being able to go to the other side of the property in really heavy rain. (There is a gate from the road onto that section though). Australia is a land of climate extremes, droughts and flooding rains (there's a poem in there somewhere !) Valleys flood, eventually, that's natures way, cope with it or move. Simple choice. I too am expecting an economic collapse soon, perhaps along with a world war 3, and nukes. Prolonged wet weather means drowned gardens and sick animals, like you say, misery squared. The pigs and ducks are the only animals here that seem to like the wet. The southern USA is experiencing a drought, look at Lake Mead and the river level that's fallen 150 meters in the past 10 years. Coming on winter, with 30% less hydro generation, its gonna be difficult. Add to that gas issues on the continent and the wait for a wood heater is 3 years at present, let alone the supply of a totally renewable energy source called wood.

That's the problem with todays supply chains of arranging everything to be delivered just in time, rather then regional warehouses and supermarkets having a larger back storage areas to hold a couple of days buffer.

That's the problem with todays supply chains of arranging everything to be delivered just in time, rather then regional warehouses and supermarkets having a larger back storage areas to hold a couple of days buffer. ---- --- Unfortunately.. The JIT system seems invented by bean counters to make the next cash sheet look good, using there definition of the system to support that.. Problem is, so many things in an unperfect world will make that not work, but all are "not my fault" to the pencil pushers... DON'T get me started... --- --- Latest political scam seems to be Canadian liberal government is restricting availability of agriculture fertilizers some how to bolster there "environment" agenda someway... This is already predicted to cost Canadian wheat farmers near $400 million this year.. Other crops costing farmers as much or more...

The problem wiht JIT is you can't compete with it. Any company keeping inventory will be run out of business by the extra cost. You'd need some form of major global disaster every couple of years to make keeping inventory profitable.
