Probably not a high priority for most, but this is worth a read to understand what different kinds of masks/filters do and do-not protect you from and how practical they are to wear for long periods of time. Comfort is critical with these things. www.pewpewtactical.com/best-gas-masks-respirators-filters/

Also worth mentioning if you own one make sure you know how to test that a mask fits perfectly if intending to use it in highly toxic environments. I once carted a work mate to the ER because he had a minor leak on the mask seal that he didn't pick up until he started feeling funny. We got him into clean air as soon as he noticed a problem but the symptoms continued to worsen despite the fact the amount of toxic gas he inhaled must have been minute. The subsequent poisoning symptoms, as they developed over the next 15 minutes, were traumatic and frightening to observe. All this from a product that can be legally purchased in our country if you have the right paperwork.
He was in hospital for a week and took about 3 months to fully recover from his experience.

Yeah the P100 masks are the one Im as far to go with. Will have to quickly cut of my beard though to make sure I get a good seal.

I'm just growing my beard longer, so I can fold it up to utilise it's filtering properties.

Looking at one of my suppliers catalogue the other day and saw they do industrial masks. The typical ones used when handing chemicals etc rather then the traditional "gas mask" both full face and half face versions in 2 different types of rubber. They have a good range of filters to suit them as well ranging from the usual P1/2/3
I was thinking whether it might be worth getting some in for me to sell in my business, but don't know what filters would be best to sell with them

But they have a lower exposure limit (ie less time in a contaminated environment before they saturate and stop working) than specific gas/vapour cartridges and cost a bit more.

These disposable mask articles are interesting. If they are accurate and the masks don't filter out thermally generated particles I can see grounds for lawsuits coming from tradies who have used disposable p2 masks as workplace protection.
I think a decent quality p2 fitted as good as possible has to be much better than nothing even if it isn't perfect.

Forest fire smoke was what came to mind for me when the thread appeared.
OK... The blue surgical style mask may not be useful, but it makes me wonder about the molded type white "painters mask" (?) Is it any better, no worse ??
We have a 38 liter tote almost full of painters mask types. Accumulated several or a box or two boxes at a time from garage sales and such for cheap. I have a feeling with forest fire smoke, they may not be totally effective, but better than nothing.

Heh, heh, heh ... yep! That's a freaky link.
remove the first line and it could be an encrypted message to launch nukes or something.
On a more serious note:
I have a sister who is several years older than me, lived and worked on cattle stations in NT for years and now resides somewhere west of Toowoomba. Quite robust health. She ended up in hospital for several days last week on a serious bit of respirator kit and at risk of dying. She sent me a pic where she looks like a smurf because her blood oxygen was so low and CO2 so high. Cause: Her doc says Pneumonia and chronic asthma brought on by inhaling too much smoke and dust for too long. I suspect she'll take masks a lot more seriously going forward.
