"And the University of Sydney last month noted that the United States could ultimately consider it too costly to clash with China in aid of its allies".
That's a thought provoking statement. And has major implications for a host of allied nations, including us.

I'm cautiously optimistic China has no incentive to want to do anything radical to Australia in terms of direct military damage. They don't have much of an expansionist history and we already provide them with huge amounts of raw materials. Our closer neighbors might be a bit more concerning though if they feel they can get away with things.

This video has a pretty good telling of the limitations of a Chinese ground/air invasion of Aust. They are more then likely to just financially cripple us using shipping blockades etc

For Australia the Invasion Phase is over, the Chinese are currently in Phase II (consolidation and reinforcement of their position). All States and territories have conceded defeat with the exception of the ACT which I'm not sure of their current situation as the Federal Parliament AKA "HQ Fifth Column" is also located here. I suspect they could be granted some special "People's Hero" Regional Status, possibly someone like Sam Dastyari would be in a better position to comment.

China are being very clever about this. They are taking the land they want bit by bit rather than all at once. The 21st century's Chinazis are far more tactical than their 20th century counterparts. First it's Macau/Hong Kong. Make them feel 'special', then slowly integrate into mainland China. Next make claims but don't assert them too aggressively like the Spratleys, moving only as the political climate allows. They've already taken islands off Vietnam and the Phillipines. Taiwan will take much longer. The current strategy is to politically isolate Taiwan, and it is working. There is an ever shrinking list of nations that still recognise Taiwan. Solomon Islands were the last to switch. Once this is complete and Taiwan has no recognition, China will wait for an excuse and strike. Who is going to go to war with China over a territory that most of the world recognises as theirs? Then it's old land disputes with India and other neighbours. By then (2050-2100), nobody will be able to stop them and we have a new world power. I can't see this ending well for Australia.

Our closer neighbors might be a bit more concerning though if they feel they can get away with things. Tibet. Paracels. Spratleys. Xinxiang. China has a border dispute with almost every single country unfortunate enough to be their direct neighbor. China will win this inch by inch. Their political influence throughout the west is massive. Do you think Australia would send troops if China siezed land from a decades old dispute? We'd stand by with our politicians reminded of where their campaign funds come from.

Those tic-tac land acquisitions are miniscule compared to what England, the US and Russia have achieved over the years. Not even comparable to England annexing Scotland. As for influence ... Oz has been the 53rd state of the US since 1942 - apparently we do Halloween now too!. Before that our dearest wish was to be just like England. Our culture revolves around emulating colonial powers. If, against my expectation, China turns out to be colonial ... give it time and we'll probably love being Chinese too. Ever notice how preppers stockpile rice! Indonesia ... there's a different risk altogether. We'll all be begging the Chinese to save us if they decide to annex Oz.

My professional life has taken me to Hong Kong, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Tibet, Xinjiang, New Guinea, New Britain, Solomons, Vanuatu, Java, Bangka-Belitung, Indonesia etc and that is just the list relevant to this thread! I have seen up close and personal the exploitative and very negative influence the Chinese Communist Party and their regional puppets are having in these places! It's nothing short of literal invasion, regional domination and Cultural Genocide!

England, US and Russia made almost all their gains against non-industrialised opponents. China doesn't have that luxury. Having lost a large part of it's empire in 1990, Russia is regaining parts of it bit by bit and nobody is helping their victims (Ukraine, Georgia). England gives away it's territory with not much of a fight these days, save for the Falklands. It will be a very long time before anyone tries to forcibly annex US territory. Agree with you on US influence in Australia. We'd do well to stay out of their conflicts.

Public criticism of this sees you 'disappear'. We isolated South Africa for decades for far less, yet China gets a free pass. There are so many parallels with 1930s Germany, it's very concerning.
