Hi all,
Very long time reader here as I’d prefer to sit in the shadows. But recent events has made me come out of the dark to highlight a few things that some people maY not have thought of.
first of, a bit of background about myself and this will put the following in context. I’ve been an anonymous reader here for a few years - preferring not to put myself out there - even though I use a vpn and also tor. Very secretive person. My plan has always been to bug in - I have enough supplies, very good security and can live in my disguised urban fortress very well for a long period of time. Or so I thought.
recent events has forced me to evacuate, ie bug out. I am not in an immediate fire zone, but the smoke was very very unhealthy. We’ve had consecutive days of air quality exceeding Delhi. We could not go outside.
so I picked the family up and bugged out. I already had a few boxes of p2 masks (I could’ve sold them on the Cnr and made 10x what I paid for them). So I gave have my wife 1 hrs notice and said we are leaving. I always keep agleast 1/2 a tank of fuel in the car and always have a bag in the boot. But having a 4 month old baby does slow down the packing and increase the luggage requirments. My wife needed this time to pack stuff for the baby. But we got it all done.
took my hand held radios too as mobile phones were cutting out. Took the battery operated am/FM sangean radio (picks up short wave too) and we headed off to one of my spots about 2 hrs from my city. The roads were rather busy so we weren’t the only ones with this idea. But we kept going and got to my spot and were glad we did so.
before committing to this destination, I checked the air quality here via the air quality app and it was a 1/10 of the quality from where we come from. First sign of a blue sky in 2 weeks - even though it was a very very pale blue sky.
got to our cabin and all is sweet.
any way, I had always planned to bug in thinking I could work around any events in my city - but environmental factors, ie air quality, made me bug out. So if you are thinking of bugging in, always, and I mean always have a plan b - just in case you cannot bug in. Additionally, if you are bugging out, have more then 1 or 2 places in mind - for the same reason. The environment factors may also be present at your bug out location. This leads into, have a process to check the environment at your planned desitination before you get there. I’ve got the air quality app on my phone so I can check - plus, I look at some public web cams that are close by - also check the weather conditions via various apps. It is very easy to have access to heaps of weather data now - so use those tools.
having hand held radios is great too. It allows you to listen to road conditions and also local gossip tht may not be on the abc. Use both vhf and uhf - vhf for various services and uhf for road traffic, ie truckers, grey nomads etc. also have a portable am/FM radio. My handheld unit may be overkill but it alos picks up shortwave which is what I want. Have At least am/FM battery radio so you can listen to the abc.
as I mentioned, there was plenty of traffic on the roads and at a rest stop (which was a baby nappy change place), I was listening to the crowd. Not talking to the wife, but making a point to eavesdrop on what people were doing. I was surprised that some were saying they were just driving north with no planned destination. They just wanted to drive to get away from the smoke and I got the impression they didn’t do any research beforehand. Stupid people. So be it. Lesson here - always listen to the crowd. Don’t participate in any discussions, but when in a crowd, ie maccas, listen to what the peolpe are talking about.
so we are here now out of the way of the dirty and hazardous air. I am still checking the air quality app every few hours though and if the smoke comes here then I will go to plan c. We are at plan b now (plan a is bugging in).
but air quality is very important to me - especially with a 4 month old baby. That is why we bugged out. We weren’t told to do it and many peolpe in my city were still doing their normal things even though the air was worse then Delhi. So we got out.
that is my story.

btw - I never felt so alive as to when we bugged out. Packing the car and getting out.
