I never have owned a place where I collected grass clippings..
When I had my old lake place, I kept a barrel with compost, some raked up grass clippings so it would digest, and all manor of things that would have normally went to chickens ...if I could have had them there..
It took about 10 minutes tops to become such a bear magnet I had to get rid of it right away.. It still took the rest of the summer for the bears to quit stopping by, just to check...
Now being older we container garden.. So compost from the local land fill is cheap, easy and better quality than I likely could manufacture..

Tim, not suitable for everyone this method i agree. My grandfather did this method on his property, usually the back corners of fence region not far from the garden. Not many pests to worry about apart from the odd possum but the generally dont mess with compost from my experience. Dogs on the other hand might make a mess if they are wild ones. Depends on the region for sure.

Depends on the region for sure. I will attest that this method works really well and I produce large amounts of compost during the year to add to my beds and gardens. I keep my piles to the outer perimeter and fence lines of my property because I have found the occasional wood rat from the forest beyond nesting there. They love the warmth it generates. I also seem to attract snakes that ley their eggs in the loose, warm and moist soil. For the most part it is a great way to manage the excess waste (grass clippings, autumn leaves , plant prunings and animal beddings and manures) that a small homestead produce.

I guess I didn't go far enough to address this.. Our big pasture is logged and reclaimed forest about 25 years ago now.. It was not done the best at the time.. Short story... Pretty much done on the cheap so this leaving a lot of good and bad spots in the reseed that was done..
We routinely spread chicken, rabbit, donkey barn cleaning on the thin spots.. This a slow, but cheap way of intorducing seeds from hay, humus and other matter to the ground.. Depending on the condition of the spot, I do a light pass with the tractor and disk, spread cleanings, go over it with the chain drag harrow to spread and incorperate a little.. Again, slow, cheap and it does work..
