Did you know that you can get a text message through to Triple Zero (000) in an emergency? Using the National Relay Service as an intermediary you can send a text message to the NRS number (0423 677 767) that will be read out by a NRS operator and they will place a call to 000 on your behalf and then relay messages, again via SMS, back to your phone. This could be useful in a situation where you wanted to maintain silence (perhaps during a home robbery) or were unable to speak due to injury or being gagged. These are unusual situations, but as preppers it pays to have options, and using the NRS to contact emergency services is one such option. If you put 000 in your message it will be prioritised, but as all SMS is store and forward technology its delivery can not be guaranteed to be instant. It is not limited to emergency calls, it can be used to contact anyone on any number and although it was created for people with disabilities, it is a free service open to anyone. If you want more info check out the FAQ here: relayservice.gov.au/faqs/sms-relay-faqs/ and tips for using the service here: relayservice.gov.au/support/tips-for-making-calls/tips-for-sms-relay-calls/Put the NRS number in your phone - 0423 677 767 - you may need it one day?

From the Web Site So will my emergency SMS go straight through to Triple Zero?
No, your SMS call will go to the NRS. If you need police, fire brigade or ambulance you should include Triple Zero (000) in your message and the NRS computer system will recognise this as soon as the message is received. Your SMS call will then get priority over all non-emergency calls in the queue. When it is answered, the relay officer will place the call to Triple Zero and will stay on the line as long as needed to relay the call to emergency services.
